FSSAI

If your business deals with food or edible items, complying with the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) Act is essential. This regulation requires businesses to be registered and licensed by the Food Safety Department. Whether you're a small or large-scale operation involved in manufacturing, storing, transporting, or distributing food, securing an FSSAI registration or license is mandatory. Compliance ensures the safety and quality of food products in India.

FSSAI Licensing and Registration

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, all food businesses in India must obtain an FSSAI license or registration. The type of authorization depends on the business's size and activities, such as manufacturing, storage, distribution, or sale of food products.

Who Needs an FSSAI License?

Any business involved in food production, storage, distribution, or sale must have an FSSAI license. This includes restaurants, catering services, food factories, food delivery services, and online food vendors.

FSSAI Registration

Small food manufacturers with a turnover below Rs. 12 lakhs must obtain FSSAI registration. This applies to street vendors, small retailers, and businesses producing food in small quantities, such as:

  • Annual turnover below Rs. 12 lakh
  • Daily production capacity not exceeding 100 liters or kg (except for milk, meat, and fish)
  • Milk procurement of up to 500 liters daily
  • Limited slaughtering capacity (10 small animals, 2 large animals, or 50 poultry birds per day)

FSSAI registration is identified by a 14-digit code, starting with the number "2."

FSSAI License for Food Businesses

Larger food businesses with a turnover over Rs. 12 lakh must obtain an FSSAI license. This includes two types of licenses:

  • State License: For medium-sized businesses with a turnover between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 crores.
  • Central License: For large businesses with a turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crores, including those involved in international trade.

Benefits of an FSSAI License

Obtaining an FSSAI license provides several advantages:

  • Legal Compliance: Ensures your business complies with all regulatory requirements, reducing legal risks.
  • Food Safety Assurance: Guarantees that your food products meet safety standards.
  • Brand Trust: Displaying the FSSAI logo boosts consumer confidence and strengthens your brand's reputation.
  • Consumer Loyalty: FSSAI certification demonstrates your commitment to quality and food safety.
  • Attracts Investors: An FSSAI license adds credibility, making your business more appealing to investors.
  • Quality Assurance: Reassures customers about hygiene and quality.

Securing an FSSAI license and ensuring regular renewals will enhance your food business's reputation, legal standing, and market success.
